Four, beautiful, successful and talented best friends Diane (Diane Keaton), Vivian (Jane Fonda), Sharon (Candice Bergen) and Carol (Mary Steenburgen) who have known each other forever, meet once every month for their Book Club. They meet not only to discuss books but also to talk about their lives, their experiences and their problems. They all have different life stories and different characters, but they share one thing: a desire to be loved… a desire for an intimate companionship. Consequently they all ask themselves a difficult question… however 50 year old women can build a new romantic relationship and cope in a first date situation?
I’m not going to give you any more spoilers, but if you want to know more about Diane, Vivian, Sharon and Carol you can see the movie as it is available to Download & Keep and on DVD& Blu-ray right now.
The plot of this amazing romantic comedy became an inspiration for my today’s post. How do you dress for a first date when you are over 50 years old? How do you create a look that will make you feel beautiful, confident and comfortable? How to choose an outfit to fit the place where the first date is happening, whether it is a date in a cinema, walk in a park, coffee in a little café or dinner in a beautiful hotel… Since first dates (regardless of our age) can be stressful I wanted to suggest to you four outfits that will be perfect for four types of dates…As shown in the movie each of us are different, each of us has a different style but we all have so much to offer and we should never give up on love.
First Date : A Walk in a park
Wear something warm. I have opted for knit set (roll-neck and skirt) and low heel shoes. When there is a chance for a long walk high heels may be difficult to bear (blisters are never welcomed, and let’s face it they are not sexy!). This look reminds me of Carol (Mary Steenburgen), it’s cute and sweet, but at the same time as its colourful, and it shows that you are not scared of being yourself and trying new things; hence instead of wearing a regular bag, I’m wearing a belt bag. Don’t be afraid to show your personality through your outfit.
First Date: Cinema
Wear something comfortable, but chic. Who knows maybe after the cinema you will decide to go for a nice dinner. I have chosen to wear high raised trousers and paired them with unique top and jewellery. This is an option for ladies who are a bit like Diane Keaton’s character, who prefer a more masculine style. The unique top and jewellery make this outfit less formal and more fun. Don’t forget about accessories e.g. beautiful bag or shoes – they will make this whole outfit feel more feminine!!
First Date: Restaurant in a Beautiful Hotel
I believe that beautiful places requires from us to wear beautiful dresses. For a first date in a restaurant I decided to wear a beautiful maxi dress. This outfit reminds me of Vivian (played by Jane Fonda), it is confident, just a bit daring …but it’s a show stopper, I guarantee your date won’t be able to take his eyes off you. This kind of dress does not need a lot of accessories, my advice would be to keep it simple. Wear a stunning pair of heels and a clutch. This is all you need.
Dress – Solace of London (same one here)
Shoes – Loewe
Bag – Mango
First Date: Coffee in a Café
Maxi skirt, white shirt, pearls – this look seems a bit more serious, on a first glance it may seem even a bit intimidating just like Sharon played by Candice Bergen. However, I think it’s a very classy and elegant look and class is always in fashion. Furthermore the beautiful red shade of the skirt and emphasised waste makes this whole outfit very energetic. In addition, I think that a white shirt (you can unbutton it a bit) is always a great option. If you don’t like maxi skirts, you can wear it with trousers – just don’t forget to add jewellery and high heels (they will make the white shirt a bit sexier).
